The hotel

Built around what the ground gave up.

explora opened here in July 2016, its first lodge outside Chile. The Chilean architect José Cruz Ovalle drew a long building of adobe and wood among the cornfields near the village of Urquillos. While it was going up, the builders came upon an Inca site, and the plans changed to work around it. The land was once an Inca corn plantation.

On the estate stands the Pumacahua house, a colonial manor from the seventeenth century, restored with Peru's archaeology institute. It now holds the bath house: saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and an outdoor pool. Rooms have no television and no minibar. Every one looks out over the corn and the mountains. More than forty guided explorations leave from the lodge, on foot, by bicycle or by van.
