The hotel
A village on the sacred river.
The hotel opened in April 2009 on the bank of the Urubamba, the river that gives the Sacred Valley its name, a few minutes from Urubamba town on the road to Ollantaytambo. Orient-Express bought it before the year was out, and in 2014 it took the Belmond name with the rest of the group. Cusco is about seventy minutes away by car, and Ollantaytambo station fifteen.
Its rooms were laid out like a small Andean village, in stone and wood among gardens of wildflowers, each with a terrace towards the river and the valley. The terraces on the slopes around have been farmed since about 800 BCE. Much of what the kitchen cooks comes from the hotel's own plots. Two villas stand apart in riverside gardens, with room for families of up to six.
- A train stop of its own Between January and April, guests can board the train to Machu Picchu at the hotel's private station. Otherwise Ollantaytambo station is about fifteen minutes away.
- Mayu Willka spa Massages and wellness programmes planned for each guest, and a heated outdoor pool in the grounds.
- On the valley Horse riding, rafting on the Urubamba, cycling and yoga, all from the hotel.
