The hotel
The state hotel in the old capital.
Buea sits at about 870 metres on the eastern slopes of Mount Cameroon, and from 1901 to 1919 it was the seat of German Kamerun. The palace of the German governor Jesko von Puttkamer still stands, and fog often rolls down from the mountain into the streets. The Mountain Hotel opened here in 1958, one of two government hotels in the Government Residential Area, and was renovated in 1994.
The state paid for another renovation in the years before 2020, and the national daily Cameroon Tribune then described it as a four-star house. It has a pool, a gym, a restaurant and rooms for meetings and banquets, and it lodged the officials and teams of the 2016 African women's football championship. Mount Cameroon, 4,040 metres high, rises behind the town, and the University of Buea, the country's first English-speaking university, is in the town too.
- Under the volcano Buea is built on the mountain's eastern slopes. Its last eruption was in 2012, and the Race of Hope runs to the summit and back.
- Colonial Buea The former governor's residence and the Bismarck fountain are among the landmarks left from the German years.
- Pool and gardens A swimming pool, a gym and spacious grounds, which the hotel also hires out for photo shoots.
