The hotel
A mountain resort in Gora.
Fufu began at Atami in 2007, and Hakone opened on 22 January 2022 as part of a run of new houses in Kawaguchiko, Nara, Nikko and Kyoto. It is run by Hulic Fufu, a joint venture of the Katoh Pleasure Group and the property company Hulic. The building sits on the slope above Gora, facing the ridges of the Hakone range, about five minutes by car from Gora Station. All 39 rooms are suites.
The entrance is built of Hakone rock with hinoki and hiba cypress. Two springs reach the hotel. The large public bath draws on water from Owakudani, high in sulfate, and the bath in each suite runs on the chloride-rich Gora spring. Rooms have large sofas and daybeds. The MICHELIN Guide calls the result a modern take on the ryokan, under an hour by train from Tokyo.
- Two springs A sulfate spring for the public bath, which the MICHELIN Guide calls exfoliating, and a chloride spring, which it calls moisturising, for the baths in the suites.
- Choose your dinner The first Fufu with a prix-fixe dinner: guests build their own course from tempura, teppanyaki beef and seasonal sushi.
- The spa Treatments include a bath of warm, fermenting wood chips.
