The hotel

Down the cable car to the river.

Guests check in at the Upper Reception on the old Tokaido road, where replica samurai armour stands in the hall. A private cable car then takes about five minutes to drop some hundred metres into the valley of the Hayakawa. Nine villas wait at the bottom, among the trees by the river. The group behind ESPACIO The Jewel of Waikiki opened them in July 2024.

The name honours the four guardian creatures of Hakone: the kirin, the phoenix, the tortoise and the dragon. Japanese craftsmen worked them into each villa in kumiko lattice, karakami paper, lacquer and gold and silver leaf. Water comes from the Dogashima spring, one of the seven old springs of Hakone, and fills the baths undiluted. Tradition holds that the Zen priest Muso Soseki founded the spring in the fourteenth century.

  • Kyoto in the villa Dinner is kaiseki in the Kyoto manner, directed by Takahiro Yamagishi of Tominokoji Yamagishi and served in your villa, with sake chosen by Keita Akaboshi.
  • ESPACIO SPA The brand's first spa, with an open-air bath in a lava cave and a bedrock bath of old Austrian marble.
  • Baths of your own Every villa has an open-air bath, an indoor bath and a plunge pool, and five of the nine add a sauna.
