The hotel
A castle in the yungas.
The castle has stood in San Lorenzo since the early twentieth century, a stone building in the style of a northern Italian castle. The vaulted ceilings rest on railway rails. The iron railings around it were made from the barrels of Remington rifles used in the War of the Triple Alliance against Paraguay. Inside, the suite keeps a wood-burning stove, and most rooms open onto balconies over the quebrada.
It is now owned by John Johnston, who came to Salta from Bolivia more than thirty-five years ago, and runs as a hotel of eight rooms with a restaurant and café. San Lorenzo sits at the mouth of a green quebrada, where trails, riding and the cloud forest of the yungas begin. The village is ten kilometres from the city by Ruta Nacional 9.
- Kitchen garden Bread and pasta are made in the house, with seasonal produce from the castle's own organic garden.
- Italian café A café and patisserie in the Italian manner, alongside the restaurant.
- Into the quebrada Walks, trekking and riding in the Quebrada de San Lorenzo start from the village.
