The hotel

Fairways laid on coral.

For years this was Leisure Lodge Beach & Golf Resort. Planhotel Hospitality Group, a Swiss company with hotels in Kenya, Zanzibar, the Maldives, Italy and Switzerland, now runs it under its Diamonds name, and the rooms facing the sea have been renovated. The resort runs along Diani Beach, with gardens, four pools and a restaurant set directly on the sand. Ukunda airstrip is about ten minutes away by car.

The golf course came in 1998. Tommy Fjastad laid out eighteen holes on ground that was mostly coral outcrop, so many thousands of tons of soil were trucked in to make the fairways. The course stands on the shore of the Indian Ocean, about twenty miles south of Mombasa, and it hosts the Diani Beach Masters, the largest amateur golf event held in Kenya each year.

Flying to Diani Beach.

Ukunda airstrip, for daylight flights from Nairobi, is about ten minutes by car. Private jets from abroad clear customs at Moi International in Mombasa, about an hour away on the new road, our estimate, and the drive continues south to the resort.
