The hotel
A merchant prince's house on the hill.
Montenotte, on the hill north of the centre, has long been one of Cork's smarter addresses, and this house, built for a merchant prince, dates from 1755. It stands among woodland on the Middle Glanmire Road, and from the terrace the whole city spreads out below. Behind the house, a sunken Victorian garden lay forgotten for years before it was found again and restored.
Frankie and Josephine Whelehan own and run the hotel today. The old house is now the heart of a hotel of 107 rooms and Woodland Suites, with twenty-six self-catering Residences, a fifty-seat cinema, a spa and a health club with a twenty-metre pool. A rooftop bar followed in the summer of 2021, and the Cork Business Association named it Cork Hotel of the Year for 2020.
- Cameo Cinema A private cinema of fifty seats inside the hotel, with a large screen and proper sound.
- Bellevue Spa Six treatment rooms using Grown Alchemist products, with the Motion Health Club and its twenty-metre pool alongside.
- The gardens Six acres of grounds, with the restored sunken Victorian garden, woodland and a wildflower meadow.
