The hotel
A marquis's house over the Abra.
In 1925 the Marquises of Arriluce had the Bilbao architect José Luis Oriol Urigüen build them a house on the cliffs at Neguri, the part of Getxo where the city's industrial families moved in the early twentieth century. He drew it in the English manner, with Victorian Gothic and Queen Anne touches, looking over the Abra bay to the open sea. In 2001 it was listed as a protected cultural asset.
A restoration of four years turned it into a hotel, which opened in the autumn of 2023 as a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. The stained glass and marquetry were repaired, and furniture and paintings from the house went back on the walls. The dining room keeps a mantelpiece that Sonia Delaunay, a friend of the family, designed for the Marquise.
- Kupka The cocktail bar in the former chapel and library, under the original stained-glass windows.
- Croquet A full-size lawn and the Arriluce Croquet Club in the gardens.
- Neguri Spa Treatments, a sauna, a Turkish bath and a hydro-jet pool, inspired by a nineteenth-century spa in Neguri.
