The hotel
A walled camp around an old temple.
The Oberoi Rajvilas stands outside Jaipur on Goner Road, behind white walls built to look like a Rajput fort. Carved elephants guard the gates and the fountains are lined with hand-painted blue tiles. At the centre sits a Shiva temple of the 18th century, about 280 years old, rising from a pond of lotus flowers. The temple has been restored and still stands at the heart of the grounds.
The grounds cover thirty-two acres. Rooms are grouped in clusters of four and six, and the tents take their shape from the camps that Rajput princes pitched for the hunt, with teak floors and baths inside the canvas. The spa occupies a restored haveli of the same century as the temple, and the pool is lined with blue tiles to match the fountains.
- The temple A restored Shiva temple about 280 years old, standing in a lotus pond in the middle of the grounds.
- The Oberoi Spa Ayurvedic and other treatments in a restored 18th-century haveli.
- Dinner by candlelight Candlelit dinners with live dancers, as the MICHELIN Guide describes them, and four courses of Indian cooking at Rajmahal.
