The hotel
A haveli among the jewellers.
Lal Haveli was built in 1871 as a family house in Johri Bazaar, the jewellers' street of the old walled city, and was later a centre of the Independence Movement. Its three storeys mix Rajput, Mughal and neoclassical forms, with bone inlay and painted murals. The walled city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Five suites now look onto the inner courtyard.
The Johri opened here in April 2021. It belongs to the restaurateur Abhishek Honawar and the jeweller Siddharth Kasliwal, and is a sister to 28 Kothi. The New York designer Naina Shah restored the house with pichwai paintings, antique furniture and local textiles, and set strong colour and graphic patterns against the old walls. There is no pool or gym, though massages can be arranged.
- The restaurant All-vegetarian Indian cooking from local produce, on a seasonal menu drawn from the walled city. Palak chaat and a jackfruit nihari are among the dishes.
- Pukhraj Lounge Tea in the late afternoon, then cocktails made in the house after dark.
- The bazaar The hotel stands in Johri Bazaar, among the jewellers who gave the street its name.
