The hotel

A Vanderbilt hotel on the Condado shore.

Frederick William Vanderbilt paid for the hotel and chose Warren and Wetmore, the architects of Grand Central Terminal in New York. It opened on 16 October 1919 with 98 rooms. Charles Lindbergh, Errol Flynn and the Roosevelts stayed. After the family sold it in 1930 it changed names and owners several times, and in 1973 only an order from Governor Luis A. Ferré stopped it being pulled down.

The doors closed in June 1997 and stayed shut for years. A restoration costing some US$270 million brought back the original building, which joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. It reopened in October 2012, on the hotel's anniversary, and two new towers on the sea, the Spa Tower and the Beach Tower, followed in December 2014. The hotel joined Historic Hotels of America in 2015.
