The hotel
A century on George Enescu Square.
The French architect Théophile Bradeau designed the hotel on the site of an old inn, and it opened in 1914 as the first building in Bucharest framed in reinforced concrete. In 1937 Duiliu Marcu gave the facade its plainer Art Deco lines. During the Second World War the hotel was a meeting place for diplomats and spies, a world Olivia Manning put into her Balkan Trilogy.
A new wing on Calea Victoriei followed in 1965, and the building came through the earthquake of March 1977. It was damaged in the 1989 revolution and closed in 1994, then reopened in October 1997 as a Hilton after a renovation financed by the EBRD. The rooms of the 1965 wing were redone in 2021. On 1 January 2023 it became an InterContinental, the brand's return to Romania. The Romanian Athenaeum stands next door, and the former Royal Palace is in view.
- Le Diplomate The ballroom, a listed historic monument, with gold leaf on the walls, crystal mirrors and a stained-glass ceiling.
- The English Bar The hotel's historic bar, under chandeliers and a beamed ceiling.
- Pools and spa An indoor pool in the spa, with a sauna, steam room and whirlpool, and an outdoor pool for summer.
