The hotel
Two hotels and a picture house on one corner.
Hotels have stood on this plot since the early nineteenth century. The Mediterranean Hotel became The Imperial under Gioacchino Ellul in 1858 and later the St James Hotel, which was bombed in 1941. After the war the site was rebuilt as the Embassy Cinema, which opened on 1 July 1954 and grew to four screens. In December 2000 it became a shopping complex with cinemas.
In 2018 the planners approved a four-star hotel inside the same shell, with its entrance on Strait Street and the shops kept on St Lucy Street. Architect Martin Xuereb kept the outside walls and the height and rebuilt the floors within. The hotel opened in December 2020 with 81 rooms, a pool on the floor that once held the cinema services, and six small cinema theatres still in the building.
- The rooftop A heated infinity pool used all year round, and breakfast on the terrace beside it, with the view running inland towards Mdina.
- Films downstairs The building kept its cinemas: six boutique screens under the same roof as your room.
- Inside the walls The hotel stands in the old city, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Grandmaster's Palace, Hastings Gardens and the Manoel Theatre are all within walking distance.
