The hotel
A townhouse with a cave beneath it.
The house on St Ursula Street is a traditional Maltese townhouse, about four hundred years old, built around an inner courtyard with a broad stone staircase. Its architecture is Baroque, with Roman and Arabic touches. The entrance is a discreet door off the street. The courtyard now has a roof and is where breakfast is laid out each morning, and the cellars cut into the rock below have become the spa, with a heated pool in what the hotel calls a cave.
Each of the thirteen rooms takes its own style, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Classical or Baroque. Stone walls and old beams stay in view, softened by pastel colours and painted landscapes, and every room has a 40-inch screen and Bluetooth sound. The palazzo belongs to IK Collection, a Maltese group that also runs Holm Boutique & Spa and IKYK in Paceville. The MICHELIN Guide lists it in its hotel selection.
- The roof A temperature-controlled pool on the terrace, with a view over the rooftops of Valletta.
- Ikonika Spa In the old cellars: a heated plunge pool in the rock, a jacuzzi, a sauna and a steam room.
- The courtyard Breakfast is served under the covered courtyard; the house has no restaurant, and Valletta's tables are a short walk away.
