The hotel

From Casa Pensa to Palazzo Zamittello.

The house went up in the early 1600s and was first known as Casa Pensa, the home of Italian gentry close to the Order of St John. In 1805 the British Government handed it to Giuseppe Nicolo Zamitt, a judge who was later knighted. It took his name, and his statue still stands in the Upper Barrakka Gardens. His tombstone lies in St John's Co-Cathedral, in the chapel of the Langue of Auvergne.

The palazzo stayed in the family. Restored as a hotel and recognised by the Malta Tourism Authority as a heritage hotel, it keeps its public rooms, rebuilt to the original specifications. The bedrooms add underfloor heating and double glazing, and the Sala Nobile on the second floor still takes a hundred people for dinner. In October 2025 the MICHELIN Guide gave it one Key in its first selection for Malta.

  • Top of Republic Street At the City Gate end of Valletta's main street, with some rooms looking over the open-air theatre.
  • The terrace An open-air terrace above Republic Street for a drink at the end of the day.
  • Sala Nobile The grand salon on the second floor seats a hundred for a dinner or a meeting; the Sala del Conte takes forty.
