The hotel
Two brothers and the family house.
The Elluls were wine merchants, and the family business dates from 1837. The palazzo on Old Theatre Street, a few steps off Republic Street, became their home in the same decade. It passed down through four generations until the brothers Matthew and Andrew Ellul turned it into a hotel of nine suites. It is a family business still: the brothers also run a café in the centre of Valletta, and the hotel belongs to Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
They kept what the house had: Maltese floor tiles, enclosed wooden balconies, a courtyard set with classical statues. Antiques from the family and from abroad sit beside paintings by the Maltese artist Ritty Tacsum. On the upper floors three newer suites were built in a raw, industrial style, each with a roof terrace of its own, and some of the older suites keep a fireplace.
- Roof terraces Suites 6, 7 and 8 sit on top of the house with private terraces over Valletta; 7 and 8 add a hot tub.
- Piano Nobile Suite 5, the largest in the house at about 39 square metres.
- Breakfast Included, and the kitchen will cook other meals on request.
