The hotel
A merchant's house on Merchants Street.
The building was once a merchant's home with a shop at street level, a few streets from St John's Co-Cathedral. AX Hotels, the Maltese group of Angelo Xuereb, restored it and opened it as a hotel on 29 September 2017. Claire Zammit Xuereb led the design: industrial fittings set against the old structure, with nods to St John's Co-Cathedral and the feel of a private club.
The beams are still exposed, and historic photographs of Valletta hang through the house. The rooms mix modern furniture and a few pieces from the middle of the last century. Rosselli, the group's five-star palazzo forty metres up the street, handles check-in and serves breakfast, so guests of The Saint John walk between the two. Downstairs, Cheeky Monkey pours craft beer and cooks gourmet burgers.
- Cheeky Monkey The gastropub downstairs, open since 2015, known for its burgers and a long list of beers.
- Rosselli next door Check-in and breakfast happen at the sister palazzo, home to Under Grain and its MICHELIN star.
- The grid on foot St John's Co-Cathedral, the Grand Master's Palace and Fort St Elmo are all within a few minutes on foot.
