The hotel
The Park Plaza, restored.
Work began in 1928, stopped when the money ran out in the Depression, and the hotel finally opened as the Park Plaza on 11 July 1936. Hugh Gordon Holman designed the seventeen-storey south tower; Peter Dickinson added a modernist north tower in 1956. For decades writers met at the bar on the roof, and the bar is now called the Writers Room after them. Hyatt bought the building in 1999.
It closed on 1 December 2017. The heritage south tower became Two Avenue Road, 65 rental apartments, in one of the largest heritage restorations in Canada, and the hotel moved into the renovated north tower. Alessandro Munge of Studio Munge drew the interiors from art deco, books and the Canadian seasons. It reopened on 15 September 2021, hung with Canadian and Indigenous art, among it a sculpture by An Te Liu and a woven work by Shannon Bool in the lobby.
