The hotel

Brick, concrete and red oak.

Ace's first hotel in Canada opened on 26 July 2022, a new building on Camden Street in the old Garment District, between King and Queen streets. Brigitte Shim and Howard Sutcliffe designed it with Atelier Ace. The red brick of the facade recalls the Don Valley clay bricks that shaped the look of the city, and the bar on the roof sits fourteen storeys up.

Inside, poured concrete arches rise from the restaurant, set half below street level, to the lobby, and the lobby floor, clad in red oak, hangs from them on slender steel rods. A three-storey installation by Howard Sutcliffe, Horizon Line, evokes Lake Ontario. Most of the art on the walls is Canadian, and the records in the rooms were chosen by the Toronto label Arts & Crafts.

  • Alder Patrick Kriss cooks Mediterranean food over a wood fire in the room beneath the lobby.
  • Evangeline An indoor and outdoor bar on the fourteenth floor, with eighty seats, city views and DJs at weekends.
  • Records in the room Each room has a record player and a vinyl library chosen by Arts & Crafts.
