The hotel

The first stop out east.

An inn has stood on this spot since 1679, and for centuries it was the first stop for anyone heading east along Long Island. British officers took it over in the Revolutionary War. Later it became a dance hall, a speakeasy during Prohibition and, from the 1980s, a nightclub. Both Roosevelts stayed, and so did Cary Grant, Lucille Ball, Albert Einstein and Babe Ruth.

After nearly twenty years empty, Mitchell and Gregg Rechler, Long Island developers, restored it and reopened it on 9 August 2022. Workstead designed the interiors. A painting by Jeffrey Gibson in the lobby honours the Shinnecock people. The six acres run down to the Shinnecock Canal, with cottages on the hillside above the inn, a marina and houses across the water.

  • Good Ground Tavern Union Square Events, Danny Meyer's company, runs the kitchen, its first in the Hamptons, with seafood and vegetables over a cherrywood grill.
  • Around the fire The Garden has fire pits and lounge seats for a drink outside, and The Study is a small historic room for cocktails.

Getting there

Flying to East Hampton.

JFK is the long-haul arrival, about 90 miles away, two hours or more by car depending on traffic by our estimate. Private jets can use Francis S. Gabreski at Westhampton Beach, about 20 minutes away by our estimate, which has US customs by prior notice; East Hampton Town Airport is about 30 minutes by our estimate. Helicopters and seaplanes from Manhattan reach the Hamptons in about 35 minutes.
