The city
Where every Maldives trip begins.
Almost every journey to the Maldives starts on Hulhulé, the airport island next to the capital. Malé itself is ten minutes away by ferry, or across the only bridge in the country, a dense small city around a Friday Mosque built of carved coral in 1658.
Most visitors go straight on. The resorts lie on their own islands across the atolls, and the transfer is part of the trip: a speedboat to North Malé Atoll, or a seaplane low over the reefs to farther atolls such as Baa. January to March is the driest stretch, and the sea stays warm all year.
Arriving
Runway, lagoon, then the open sea.
Velana International is the gateway for nearly every visitor. The new passenger terminal opened in July 2025, and the seaplane counters sit next to the arrival gate.
