The hotel

The tall building on Plaza Belgrano.

Salta keeps much of its colonial grid, and Hotel Alejandro I stands at its centre on Calle Balcarce, opposite Plaza Belgrano. Plaza 9 de Julio, with the cathedral and the Cabildo, is about three hundred metres away. At fourteen floors the hotel rises above most of the old town, so the upper rooms look across the church towers to Cerro San Bernardo and down the Lerma valley.

In October 2025 the hotel joined Meliá Hotels International as Hotel Alejandro I, Affiliated by Meliá, run under a franchise. Gabriel Escarrer, Meliá's chief executive, called Salta one of the group's most authentic and promising destinations. The house kept its name and its restaurant, El Mesón, along with a health club and five halls for meetings and events.

  • Views from the top The upper floors look over the city to Cerro San Bernardo, the green hill above Salta, and on clear days to the Andes.
  • Health club A heated indoor pool with hydromassage, a sauna, massage rooms and a gym.
  • Peñas on Balcarce The peñas of Calle Balcarce, where Salta goes at night for folk music, are about half a kilometre away.
