The hotel
A palace turned hotel.
Building began in 1994, financed by Prince Jefri Bolkiah, and took about six years. The Australian firm McKerrell Lynch drew the plans, and the result was meant as lodging for guests of the Sultan of Brunei. It opened officially on 16 October 2000 as the Jerudong Park Hotel, later became The Empire Hotel & Country Club, and since October 2019 has been The Empire Brunei.
The estate covers 180 hectares of beach and lagoon on the South China Sea at Jerudong, west of the capital. Rooms spread over several wings, all with balconies, some facing the sea. At the top sits the Emperor Suite, close to 670 square metres, with its own lift, pool and cinema. Golf, tennis, squash and a bowling alley fill the rest of the grounds.
- Jack Nicklaus golf An 18-hole course along the sea, with a driving range and a putting green.
