The hotel
A chef builds a hotel.
Juan Manuel Barrientos runs Elcielo restaurants in Medellín, Bogotá, Miami and Washington. After thirteen years at its first address, the Medellín dining room moved into a building of its own, and the chef put a hotel on top. Work began in January 2019 and the doors opened in 2021, at a cost of about fifteen million dollars. Around a hundred staff look after the 28 suites.
The building rises five floors in Astorga, a residential pocket of El Poblado near the Museo de Arte Moderno. From the street you see glass and metal sunshades; inside, the rooms gather round a planted atrium. The suites sit on the upper floors, with the lobby at the very top, so check-in comes with a drink and the view. Three vertical gardens of native Colombian plants climb the walls.
- The roof An outdoor pool with a glass floor, a jacuzzi, a Turkish bath, the gym and Elcielo Spa, all on the top level.
- Downstairs Navegante, a speakeasy in the basement, and a bistro on the ground floor for an easier dinner.
- In the room Most suites put a bathtub beside the bed. Wood panels, marble and travertine, and Egyptian cotton on the beds.

- Entry Standard Suite For two, with a king bed, wood panelling and a travertine bathroom.
