The hotel
A forest within a forest.
Six Senses built five lodges across Bhutan, one in each of five valleys, so that guests could travel from one to the next. Bumthang was the last to open, in March 2020, and the furthest east. It stands in pine forest on a slope above a stream full of trout. The builders worked around the trees already on the site, and the lodge took the name Forest Within A Forest.
Each suite is entered through an open courtyard with a young pine planted in it. Inside, weathered timber covers the floors, walls and ceilings, with handwoven fabrics in earth colours. Bumthang is the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, four valleys of monasteries and pilgrimage sites. From the lodge, guests walk to temples, take tea with nuns, visit a palace and taste the local barley beer.
- The hot stone bath The dotsho, a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath, and the Hingsangsa Zoni ritual of Himalayan salts, a stone bath and a massage.
- Membartsho An early trip to the Burning Lake, where Pema Lingpa is said to have dived into the river holding a lit lamp.
- The Tang valley A full day out to the remote Tang valley and the old manor of Ogyen Choling.
