The hotel

An island in Cork Harbour.

Fota is an island in Cork Harbour, just north of Great Island and south of the main road from Cork to Rosslare. For generations it belonged to the Smith-Barry family, whose Regency house, Fota House, was enlarged in the 1820s by Sir Richard Morrison and his son. Their arboretum of rare trees still grows beside it, and a railway station has served the island since 1865.

Golf came later. The Irish Open was played here in 2001 and 2002 and again in 2014, and the hotel, finished in 2006, now stands beside the Deerpark and Barryscourt courses. Fota Wildlife Park, opened in 1983 and now home to more than seventy species, shares the island. Many of the 131 bedrooms have balconies over the estate, and a family weekend can take in the animals, a round of golf and the spa.

  • Championship golf The Deerpark and Barryscourt courses, on fairways that hosted the Irish Open in 2001, 2002 and 2014.
  • Afternoon tea and Sunday lunch Both served in the hotel, along with the Fota Island Spa for slower days.
  • Next door Fota Wildlife Park, Fota House and its arboretum are all on the same island.
