The hotel

Built into the slope of Navarino Bay.

Mandarin Oriental chose Costa Navarino for its first hotel in Greece, and opened it in August 2023. The architects, Alexandros N. Tombazis & Associates with K-STUDIO, cut the villas into the hillside that runs down to the beach, sheltered them under earth and built them in local materials, after the traditional architecture of Messenia. Every room looks at the water.

The bay below is where the Battle of Navarino was fought in 1827. Across it lies Pylos, with the Neokastro above the town, and a short drive away the Mycenaean ruins of Nestor's Palace. Costa Navarino itself moved some seven thousand olive trees while it was being built and replanted them, so the resort sits among old groves as well as golf courses.

  • The spa A 25-metre heated pool that runs from indoors to outdoors over the bay, with a hammam, a herbal sauna and a cold bath. Forbes gives the spa five stars too.
  • The Private Kitchen A counter for up to sixteen guests, run by the executive chef, Bertrand Valegeas, with guest chefs who hold MICHELIN stars.

Getting there

Flying to Costa Navarino.

Kalamata International Airport is about 40 kilometres away, some 45 minutes to an hour by car. Scheduled flights are mostly seasonal; private jets land on the same runway, and Costa Navarino has its own helipad. Athens is a drive of three to four hours.
