The hotel
Domes on the dunes.
Riu opened the Karamboa in 2008, a resort crowned with domes on the coast of Boa Vista. In 2022 it went through a complete refurbishment: every room remodelled, a new lobby with more daylight, five new pools facing the ocean and new restaurants. The domes stayed. When it reopened, it took adults only, and sixty-seven of the 921 rooms now open straight onto a pool.
The beach in front is Praia de Chaves, one of the island's nesting grounds for loggerhead turtles. Sal Rei, the small capital, is about seven kilometres up the coast. Solar panels on the roof now cover much of the energy the hotel uses. Meals and drinks run on Riu's 24-hour all-inclusive plan.
