The hotel
Liaigre on the lagoon.
Le Sereno sits on about 180 metres of beach at Grand Cul-de-Sac, in front of the island's marine reserve. The Paris designer Christian Liaigre, who also did the Mercer in New York, set its tone: dark oak, white stone, four-poster beds and very little else. The red-doored lobby building survives from the first hotel, and the pool by the beach was kept exactly as it looked before.
Hurricane Irma wrecked much of the property in September 2017. The Contreras family, who own Sereno Hotels, rebuilt large parts from scratch, buying new furniture from Liaigre's own company, and reopened in December 2018 with 39 suites in place of 36, new pool bungalows and solar panels on the roofs. The hotel now makes its own water from the sea and uses the treated grey water on its gardens.
- The lagoon Snorkelling, kitesurf lessons and paddling in the marine reserve in front of the hotel, with attendants on the beach.
- Spa by the water Valmont treatments in three rooms, one of them a pavilion on the beach, the only one of its kind on the island.
- The pool A freshwater pool and sundeck at the edge of the beach, kept as it was before the rebuild.

Getting there
Flying to Gustavia.
Long-haul flights land on St Maarten, and Winair or St Barth Commuter covers the last stretch to Saint-Jean in about a quarter of an hour. From the airstrip to Grand Cul-de-Sac is about fifteen minutes by car, our estimate, and the hotel can arrange the transfer. Private jets land at Princess Juliana on St Maarten, where a propeller aircraft or a helicopter can wait for the hop across.
