The hotel
A plantation house on the hill.
For years this was Villa Marie Saint-Barth, a hotel of the Sibuet family, whose Maisons et Hôtels Sibuet has run for nearly thirty years and includes another Villa Marie in Saint-Tropez. In early 2024 it took the name of its own beach club, Gyp Sea, which had become one of the most popular places on Saint-Jean beach in a few years.
The bungalows climb a hillside at Colombier, in the north-west of the island, facing the Baie des Flamands. Inside, the décor follows the old plantation houses: polished wood, canopied four-poster beds, model ships, rope, shells and coral, with turquoise and saffron for colour. Palms and bougainvillea surround the pool, and the bar keeps a long list of rums. The MICHELIN Guide gave the hotel one Key.
- Gyp Sea Beach Club On Saint-Jean beach, about ten minutes away by car, with tropical fusion cooking, a coconut bar and a DJ through the day. Hotel guests have free loungers.
- Gyp Sea Plantation A rum and cigar lounge with a fumoir, and a Chef's Table menu cooked to order, booked two days ahead.
- Spa Pure Altitude Massages and botanical treatments, open every day from 9 am to 8 pm, with a gym alongside.

Getting there
Flying to Gustavia.
Long-haul flights land on St Maarten, and a small plane reaches the Saint-Jean airstrip in about a quarter of an hour. Colombier is about ten minutes from there by car, our estimate. Private jets land at Princess Juliana on St Maarten, where a chartered propeller aircraft or a helicopter can cover the last stretch.
