The hotel
The railway's grand hotel.
Canadian Pacific built the Royal York on the site of the old Queen's Hotel and opened it in 1929, with the Governor-General, Lord Willingdon, as its first registered guest. At 407 feet it was briefly the tallest building in the British Empire. It had more than a thousand rooms, a library of 12,000 books and a twelve-bed hospital of its own.
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth stayed here during the royal tour of 1939, and Queen Elizabeth II used the Royal Suite about twenty times between 1951 and 2000. An east wing followed in 1957, and a later overhaul of about five years restored the facade and the rooms. The hotel took the Fairmont name in 2001, and a tunnel links it to the PATH walkways underground.
- Fairmont Gold The twelfth floor works as a hotel within the hotel, with its own check-in, lounge, honour bar, breakfast and concierge.
- Bees on the roof More than 300,000 honeybees live in hives on the rooftop.
- Straight to the trains Union Station is across the street, with the UP Express to Pearson and a free shuttle to the island airport.
