The hotel
A lantern on the palace side of Ginza.
The Peninsula Tokyo opened on 1 September 2007, the eighth hotel of The Peninsula Hotels, the group from Hong Kong. It stands between Tokyo and Yurakucho stations, beside the Imperial Palace gardens, with Ginza close by on the other side. When it opened it was the first freestanding luxury hotel built in Tokyo for more than ten years, with direct access from the street.
The architect Kazukiyo Sato conceived the 24-storey building as a traditional Japanese lantern at the entrance to Marunouchi and Ginza. Yukio Hashimoto designed the guest rooms; Yabu Pushelberg did Peter, the restaurant on the top floor, with views all round. Each room has a hatch through which room service is delivered. The owner, Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, has no other Peninsula in Japan.
- Opposite the palace The Imperial Palace gardens lie beside the hotel, and the Ginza shopping district is next door on the other side.
- The Peninsula Spa Run with ESPA, with a pool and a gym. Guests with visible tattoos may be refused in the bathing areas.
- Rolls-Royces The hotel keeps its own fleet of Rolls-Royce cars.
