The hotel

The Hilton, rebuilt by Kengo Kuma.

The Tokyo Hilton opened here in 1963, ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, as the first international chain hotel in Japan. From 1983 it was the Capitol Tokyu, and its guests included The Beatles on their only visit to Tokyo. It closed in November 2006 and was taken down to make way for a new building. A corner of the bar still keeps Beatles memorabilia from that stay.

The new hotel opened in October 2010. Kengo Kuma designed a 29-storey tower with a latticed front, and water runs through the building, in fountains and even in the carpet patterns. Rooms start on the 18th floor and look over the city or the palace grounds. Next door is Hie Shrine, some five centuries old, and works by the painter Toko Shinoda hang in the lobby.

  • Shoji and wood Rooms of 45 square metres open through shoji paper screens, with low furniture, deep baths and art by local artists.
  • Pool and spa Two floors of fitness and spa, with a 20-metre indoor pool and a whirlpool facing the palace grounds.
  • Suites over the shrine Four of the thirteen suites sit on the fifth floor, looking straight into the garden and Hie Shrine.
