The hotel
The grande dame of Salisbury Road.
The Peninsula opened on 11 December 1928, built to be the finest hotel east of Suez. Thirteen years later, on Christmas Day 1941, the British governor surrendered Hong Kong to Japan in a room on the third floor, and through the occupation the building ran as the Toa Hotel for Japanese officers. The governor was held in a suite for two months. After Japan's defeat the hotel took back its own name.
In 1994 a tower of thirty storeys rose behind the original wings, adding 132 rooms and a helipad on the roof. The forecourt, facade and lobby were kept, and the hotel stayed open through the building work. A refurbishment worth HK$450 million began in 2013, in time for the 85th anniversary. Afternoon tea is still poured in the lobby, to a piano or a string quartet.
- Green Rolls-Royces Fourteen long-wheelbase Phantoms in Peninsula green, and a 1934 Phantom II for the guests who want the old car.
- Helipads on the roof The twin helipads above the tower take charters to the airport, about seven minutes away by air.
- Felix Philippe Starck designed the restaurant and bar at the top of the tower, with the harbour and Hong Kong Island in its windows.
