The hotel

The Mandarin, since 1963.

Hugh Barton of Hongkong Land proposed the hotel in 1958, and it opened as The Mandarin on 1 September 1963 with 650 rooms over 27 storeys, then the tallest building on Hong Kong Island. John Howarth of Leigh & Orange designed the building, and the film art director Don Ashton did the interiors. It was the first hotel with direct-dial telephones, and the first in Asia with a bathtub in every room.

In 2005 it closed for about nine months and came back on 28 September 2006 with fewer, larger rooms, many with the old balconies enclosed. The spa followed in 2007. A later round of work closed Pierre Gagnaire's restaurant, let Man Wah spread into the former M Bar on the 25th floor and added The Aubrey, an izakaya bar. The top floor and The Mandarin Club reopened on 1 February 2021.

  • Captain's Bar Open since 1963, and an after-work bar for guests and locals alike.
  • The Mandarin Spa Two floors of treatment rooms in the style of 1930s Shanghai, with an indoor counter-current pool and a gym that never closes.
  • The Krug Room A private dining room built around the largest Krug collection in Asia.
