The hotel
The king's hotel on his own street.
Maximilian II planned Maximilianstraße as the finest boulevard in Munich, and he wanted a hotel on it to match. The Vier Jahreszeiten opened there in 1858, meant to be the noblest house in the city. The neoclassical front still faces the street, now Munich's smartest shopping address, with the opera a short walk away. Tram 19 stops at the Nationaltheater, two minutes from the door.
Inside, the walls carry reproductions of paintings from the Pinakothek, and the rooms take their style from the age of Ludwig II. The restaurant is named after his favourite dish, a smoked char called the Schwarzreiter. The Ludwig Suite was redesigned by Colin Finnegan as a tribute to the same king. It covers 220 square metres and three bedrooms, and can be extended into the Ludwig Wing.
- Pool on the roof Kempinski The Spa sits at the top of the building, with a glass-roofed pool, a sauna and a Turkish bath.
- On Maximilianstraße The Nationaltheater is a couple of minutes away and Marienplatz about five minutes on foot.
- Butler and concierge A butler service for guests, and a concierge desk that knows the city.
