The hotel
The butchers' quarter, joined up.
The houses on this stretch of the Rennweg belonged to the butchers' guild, and one of them was its guildhouse; Widder is German for ram. Their history runs back some seven hundred years. Joining them into one hotel took about a decade of work, and the architect Tilla Theus linked the houses with passageways. The Widder opened in 1995, on the Old Town side of the Limmat, a few steps from the Bahnhofstrasse.
Each house kept its own character. Haus zum Pferch has carved woodwork set against plain modern furniture, room 308 still shows grisaille paintings from the first guildhouse, and Haus zum Bauknecht keeps a medieval ceiling over the restaurant. Eames lounge chairs and Le Corbusier sofas are part of the furniture, and a Rauschenberg triptych hangs in the Penthouse Suite. Swiss Life has owned the buildings since 2018, and The Living Circle runs the hotel.
- Widder Bar More than 650 whiskies and 1,200 spirits, with jazz and live piano. It takes no reservations.
- Widder Restaurant Stefan Heilemann's French-inspired cooking, with two Michelin stars in the current Swiss guide.
- The roof terrace A view across the roofs of the Old Town to the lake and the mountains.
