The hotel
Art Deco in front, Asia inside.
Henry Hohauser designed the Dempsey-Vanderbilt, an eight-storey Art Deco hotel that opened on Collins Avenue at 20th Street in 1937. Its restored front still faces the street. Behind it, a forty-storey tower stands right on the beach, and the two together make up The Setai: 120 rooms and suites, with three pools laid out in the gardens between the tower and the sand.
Jean-Michel Gathy planned the interiors, mixing South Beach Deco with Asian Deco. The grey brick of the lobby floor came from an Art Deco building in Shanghai, and black brick, black granite and polished teak set the tone in the rooms, where some bathrooms open onto a black terrazzo tub. The Setai belongs to The Leading Hotels of the World.
- Three pools Separated by hedges and each kept at a different temperature, with oversized daybeds around them and the Atlantic a few steps on.
- Valmont Spa Four private spa suites, each with its own bathroom and steam shower, and treatments drawn from Bali, India and Tibet.
- The tower suites Floor-to-ceiling windows, full kitchens and large balconies over the ocean.
