The hotel
A Jazz Age club on the sand.
Harvey Firestone, the tyre man, came up with the idea of a private beach club while aboard his yacht, the Marybelle. The Surf Club opened on New Year's Eve 1930 in a building by Russell Pancoast, and for decades its members and guests ran from Noël Coward and Elizabeth Taylor to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Frank Sinatra.
The Four Seasons opened here in 2017. Richard Meier, the Pritzker Prize winner, placed three new buildings around the original clubhouse, and the Parisian architect Joseph Dirand did the rooms, the restaurants, the cabanas and the spa. The grounds cover nine acres with about 900 feet of beach, laid out with gardens by Fernando Wong. Next to the 77 hotel rooms are 25 hotel residences, four bungalows, a beach villa and 156 private apartments.
- Three pools A family pool, a cabana pool and a 72-foot pool kept for adults, with forty day cabanas along Cabana Row behind the beach.
- The spa Six treatment rooms by Joseph Dirand, with a hammam, sauna and steam room, and a tea lounge looking out over the ocean and the gardens.
- Kids For All Seasons A supervised children's club in a building of its own, so families can split the day between the sand and the pool.
