The hotel
The Mediterranean on Sunny Isles.
Acqualina stands on Collins Avenue in Sunny Isles Beach, north of Bal Harbour, between the Atlantic and the Intracoastal Waterway. The resort is family owned and run, and its tower rises to a 32nd floor over four and a half acres of beachfront, dressed in the manner of a Mediterranean villa with hand-painted wallpaper and marble bathrooms. Rooms on the Intracoastal side look back across the waterway from private balconies.
There are 55 rooms and 44 suites, all large: the smallest is 740 square feet, about 69 square metres, and every one has a private terrace. Below, three swimming pools sit at sea level along the beach, the spa has a pool of its own, and Forbes Travel Guide rates both the resort and the spa Five-Star. AAA has given it Five Diamonds, and AcquaMarine, the kids' club, costs nothing.
- Acqualina Spa Twenty thousand square feet with a crystal steam room, saunas, salt-walled lounges and an outdoor pool with a hot tub under a waterfall; the wet areas are open to hotel guests without a treatment.
- AcquaMarine A free kids' club for ages 4 to 12 built around marine biology, with beach yoga and crafts.
- On the sand Three oceanfront pools, red umbrellas on the beach and dinners set out on the sand at night.
