The hotel
An imperial villa in the hills.
Gora Kadan stands on the grounds of the Kan'in-no-miya villa, a summer retreat of the Imperial Family above the hot springs of Gora. Prince Kan'in Kotohito gave it the name: Gora for the mountain, and kadan for the houses where imperial households received foreign dignitaries. He opened it to his most honoured guests, and it was run in that spirit until 1948.
Today the building is modern, in a traditional manner, with long views framed onto the forest of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The inn owns three hot springs, two of them rising in its own garden. Some rooms have open-air baths of wood or stone. It joined Relais & Châteaux in 1991, and has held three MICHELIN Keys since the first Japanese selection.
- The rock pool A mineral pool laid out among great boulders, which the MICHELIN inspectors single out as the heart of the place.
- Its own springs Three hot springs belong to the inn. Guests may also book the large spa or the family bath for forty minutes at no charge.
- Kaiseki at the table Seasonal menus built on fish from Sagami and Suruga bays, served in the room in most categories.
