The hotel
Fifty years on the West End cliffs.
When the first hotel went up here, Negril was a fishing village. Don Erickson and Dennis Stephens, who had met in Frank Lloyd Wright's office in Chicago, built octagonal villas of timber and local stone, a round thatched hut over the cave and steps cut down to the water. It opened to the public in 1974, and Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones all came through in the 1970s.
Paul Salmon and his partners bought the property in 1994. Thirteen villas on three acres have grown to forty rooms on eight, with a spa, three restaurants, a farm and a workshop that makes the furniture. Eight of the original villas still stand, restored, and the centre post of the first hut still stands in the restaurant.
- Into the cove There is no beach. Ladders and steps in the cliff lead straight into Pristine Cove, often clear enough for snorkelling.
- The cliff pool Sixty feet long and cut into the bluff, with nothing between it and the sea.
- Rockhouse Spa Treatment rooms, a bathing pavilion and an open-air yoga pavilion above the water, using Jamaican ingredients.

Getting there
Flying to Negril.
Sangster International at Montego Bay (MBJ) is the airport for scheduled flights and for private jets, which are handled on their own apron there. The drive west along the coast takes about an hour and twenty minutes to an hour and a half, depending on traffic.
