The hotel
Across the street from Gehry.
The hotel opened in 2002 as the Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao, five years after the Guggenheim, on Alameda Mazarredo directly opposite the museum. The designers Javier Mariscal and Fernando Salas did the interiors, in strong colour, as a reply to the museum across the road. Their centrepiece is the Fossil Cypress, a column of rolled stones that climbs some 26 metres through the full height of the atrium.
Today it trades as The Artist Grand Hotel of Art and belongs to Preferred Hotels & Resorts. The public rooms work as a small museum of twentieth-century furniture design, with pieces from several schools and periods, and a reading corner stocked with books on architecture and design. Rooms on the outside face the Guggenheim; those on the inside look into the building.
