The hotel

From printing works to hotel.

The Salvation Army printed here from 1901, in a building designed by Brigadier Edward Saunders in the Federation Romanesque style. Its brick facade and arched ground-floor windows survive on Albert Street, with a new tower set above them. Across the road lie Parliament Gardens, and Parliament House and the Fitzroy Gardens are close by on the eastern edge of the CBD.

Lanson Place, a Hong Kong group owned by Wing Tai Properties, opened it in September 2024 as its first hotel in Australia. More than 450 commissioned works by Melbourne artists hang through the building. In the lobby, a 40-metre installation by Jarra Karalinar Steel and Corey Thomas takes the paperbark of the Melaleuca tree as its subject, a nod to the paper once printed here.

  • The pool A heated indoor pool of 20 metres, with a spa and a fitness centre that never closes.
  • The art Over 450 pieces commissioned for the hotel, most of them by artists from Melbourne.
  • Room to stay longer Studios and apartments with one or two bedrooms sit alongside the hotel rooms, for stays of more than a night or two.
