The hotel

A hotel for the World Exhibition.

Theophil Hansen, the Danish architect of the Parliament on the Ring, designed this palais in the old financial district near the Danube Canal, and it opened in 1873 as a hotel for the Vienna World Exhibition. Its Greek columns and red façade survive. Over the next century it became flats and offices, then returned to hotel use under Kempinski in 2013.

Minor Hotels took it over in March 2024 under its Anantara name and kept the staff. A refit of every room, the spa and the restaurants ran into 2025. Three inner courtyards bring daylight inside, and the old courtyard is now Theo's, named after the architect, as EDVARD is. The rooms gained marble bathrooms and Viennese art, the spa a lighter palette, and the hotel joined The Leading Hotels of the World.

  • Theo's A lounge in the old inner courtyard: coffee and a pianist by day, cocktails in the evening, and strudel at five.
  • Anantara Spa About 800 square metres, with six treatment rooms, a hydropool, a Finnish sauna and a steam bath in the manner of a hammam.
  • Hansen's Vienna The hotel arranges visits to A.E. Köchert and Lobmeyr, glassmaking with Robert Comploj and a day among Fritz Wieninger's vines.
