The hotel
A cake, then a hotel.
The cake came first. In 1832 Franz Sacher, an apprentice cook at the court of Prince Metternich, created the chocolate torte that carries his name. His son Eduard opened a hotel behind the State Opera in 1876, and with his wife Anna made its name far beyond Vienna. The Original Sacher-Torte is still served in Café Sacher, in the same building.
The Gürtler and Winkler families run the hotel today. Alexandra Winkler, one of the owners, furnished the rooms with the French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, keeping the imperial style and adding tablets and an app that opens the door. Many rooms and most suites look onto the Opera, the Albertina or Kärntner Straße. The MICHELIN Guide gives it three Keys, the only hotel in Vienna with three.
- Café Sacher Breakfast, light meals and the Original Sacher-Torte, made since 1832.
- Three bars, three colours The Rote Bar for Austrian cooking, the Grüne Bar for something lighter, and the Blaue Bar, all in blue, for a drink after the Opera.
- Sacher Boutique Spa Sauna, steam room and a fitness area, free for hotel guests.
Rooms & suites
The Opera from the window.
There are 152 rooms and suites. Many look onto the State Opera, the Albertina or Kärntner Straße, and several suites have their own roof terrace.
- Bel Étage Madame Butterfly Suite One of the two signature suites on the Bel Étage.
- Bel Étage Wiener Philharmoniker Suite The other signature suite, named for the orchestra whose street the hotel stands on.
