The city

A bay, a lookout and the reef below.

Alofi is where Niue does its business: the church, the main shops, the visitor centre and, a few minutes up the road, the airport. Next to the church a short path runs out to Tomb Point, a lookout that takes in the whole sweep of Alofi Bay. In Alofi North are the rock pools of Vaila, inside a marine reserve where nothing may be taken, a favourite with snorkellers.

There is one resort on the island, Scenic Matavai, on the clifftop at Tamakautoga to the south, with 56 rooms and two freshwater pools; everything else is villas, studios and small lodges. Humpbacks pass Niue on their migration between July and October, and those months are also the least rainy of the year.

  • Tomb Point An easy walk beside the church to a lookout over Alofi Bay, with picnic spots nearby.
  • Vaila Rock pools in Alofi North, in a no-take marine reserve, and one of the best places on the island to snorkel.
  • Avaiki Cave The landing place of the first canoe, by tradition, with a swimming cave just to the north; go at low tide.

Arriving

One airport, two kilometres from town.

Niue's only airport, Hanan International, sits about two kilometres south of Alofi. Its asphalt runway, some 2,335 metres long, was resurfaced with New Zealand funding and reopened in July 2024.

When to go

July to October.

Afternoons sit between 25 and 29 °C through the year and the sea never drops below 25 °C. March is the wettest month, at over 300 mm; from July to October the totals fall to between roughly 90 and 140 mm, and that is also when the whales are here.
