The city
Sand between two waters.
Nida is the last village on the Lithuanian side of the Curonian Spit, a ribbon of dunes and pine forest on the UNESCO list. Its wooden houses face the Curonian Lagoon; a walk through the trees brings you to the Baltic beach, and south of the village the Parnidis dune rises above both waters.
The season is short. In July and August afternoons reach twenty-one degrees and the sea warms to eighteen or nineteen; by September the rain returns, and the spit empties until spring.
- Parnidis dune A high sand dune south of the village, with a stone sundial at the top and views over lagoon, forest and sea.
- Thomas Mann summer house The writer’s thatched holiday house of 1930, on a hill above the lagoon.
- The Baltic shore A long, open beach on the seaward side of the spit, a short walk through the pines from the village.
