The city
Where Zealand faces Scania.
Helsingør grew up at the end of the twelfth century as the crossing between Zealand and Scania, and the Swedish shore is still in plain view from the harbour. Frederick II built Kronborg on the point between 1574 and 1585; Shakespeare borrowed it, as Elsinore, for Hamlet. Behind the castle the old town keeps its merchants' lanes, Brostræde among them, and St Mary's Church, built in 1430.
The waterfront has been rebuilt around the old shipyard: the Maritime Museum of Denmark lies below ground in a former dry dock, and the Culture Yard and a food market have taken over the yard buildings. From June to August the afternoons reach about 20 °C, the season for the beaches running north towards Hornbæk.
- Kronborg Frederick II's fortress on the Sound, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the sleeping Holger Danske in its casemates.
- M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark Designed by BIG and set into the walls of an old dry dock close to the castle.
- The old town Brostræde and the streets around St Mary's Church, built in 1430, between the station and the harbour.
